Christmas is a family holiday and due to the fact that everyone has a mini-vacation (Christmas holidays) at one time, this is a convenient time for relatives to get together. And everyone needs something to give, otherwise you can ruin the relationship. Because usually within a year, Americans turn ATTENTION to something inexpensive, especially if they go abroad and buy immediately for all relatives. Americans came to Russia and the British to study in September and they had Christmas presents with them, which can only be opened in Christmas in the morning.
In general, they have a Christmas tree put on December 1 and under the tree immediately put signed gifts. No one, no adults and, most surprisingly, no children can open them before. Children have special boxes with sweets, each candy corresponds to the corresponding date. They eat one at a time, so they can see the approach of Christmas.
Also, unlike our New Year, they go to bed as early as possible in order to get up early and open their gifts.
