When changing tires in Finland

Using winter tires

Winter tires without studs with a pattern depth of at least 3 mm (or all-season tires) are allowed to be used in Finland at any time of the year.

Mandatory winter tires (with or without spikes) are required between 01.12 and 29.02.

Studded tires in Finland

As the spikes spoil the coverage of the Finnish roads their use is limited by a dangerous winter period.
The use of winter tires with spikes is allowed only during the period from 01.11 to 31.03.

In case of extreme weather conditions, the above limits may be exceeded.
In any other period of time, entry into Finnish territory with studded tires is PROHIBITED!

Using summer tires in Finland

The use of summer tires with a pattern depth of at least 1.6 mm is allowed in Finland from 01.03. To 30.11.

Easy to remember

Mandatory winter tires in 3 winter months: December, January, February.

Month before and month after - transition period. Can be spiked and without spines.

The rest is a ban on tires with spikes.
