Etymology of the name of the country: Previously the country consisted of two separate territories: a large northern part was named after the Bosna river, the smaller southern part took its name from the German noble title "Duke". This title was conferred on the supreme commander of the territory by Stefan Vikchich, Emperor Frederick IV, in 1448.
